Cambridge Research Laboratory
At Toshiba Cambridge Research Laboratory our interest lies not only in exploring new concepts, but also in their practical realisation.
We have four research teams under the direction of Professor Roberto Cipolla.
The Quantum Information Group (QIG), led by Dr Andrew Shields, is actively researching the application of Quantum Physics to Information Technologies. They have developed the leading system for Quantum Cryptography, a very secure form of optical communications. In parallel they are creating the advanced nanotechnology required in future quantum information systems.
Development of speech recognition and synthesis systems is performed by the Speech Technology Group. Led by Dr Kate Knill, they are researching the core algorithms underpinning speech recognition and synthesis. In addition, they support Toshiba’s European and North American speech technology development, for example for in-car navigation.
The Computer Vision Group is researching modelling shapes from images and video. They are looking at methods to build accurate three-dimensional models of rigid and deformable objects. In addition, they are researching into creating simple and robust interfaces using gesture recognition.
The Cambridge Research Laboratory physics and biotechnology section is also actively working on a novel cross-disciplinary physics/biotech project using Toshiba's recently patented soluble substrate technology applied to the area of biosensors, bioassays and high throughput screening.
