About Toshiba

Toshiba is a global corporation, active in many different product areas - from multi-megawatt power stations down to the latest in power-saving miniaturised chip technologies. Toshiba's range of products covers industrial appliances, transportation, power plants, consumer products, information and communications hardware and, increasingly, the semiconductor components which make a wide range of electronic devices possible and easy to use.

In Europe, the Toshiba Corporation is represented by a range of companies, which are mainly active in the following areas: medical equipment, office equipment, computers, telecommunications, electronic devices, consumer products and finance. The Toshiba office in London is the representative office for the corporation. Strategic and organisational work is carried out by the European headquarters office for the various product areas. Day-to-day operations are mainly the responsibility of the individual trading companies.

Headquarters functions are divided into four main product areas in Europe. Toshiba Medical Systems has its headquarters in Zoetermeer in the Netherlands. Semiconductor and electronic devices operate out of Düsseldorf, Germany and computer systems are based in Neuss, Germany. The headquarters for consumer products are based in Frimley in the UK.

To support the sales and marketing activities in Europe, Toshiba also has four manufacturing plants. At Braunschweig in Germany, Toshiba produces ASICs and semiconductors. In France, close to Dieppe, copiers and the toner for them are produced. In Plymouth, England, two factories produce colour TV's and air-conditioning systems. Finally, in Regensburg, Germany, there is a plant producing PCs and PCBs (motherboards).

As further proof of its commitment to Europe Toshiba has invested significantly in research and development. Toshiba Research Europe Ltd is spearheaded by a research laboratory at the Cambridge Science Park, which carries out basic research into advanced semiconductor structures. The talented team of scientists in Bristol, on the other hand, is looking into next generation digital cellular phone and wireless access technologies. Furthermore Toshiba has research and development functions at its factories in Dieppe and Braunschweig.
