 As part of a special "Fit for Future" project, employees of German bank Westdeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale (WestLB) and its wholly owned subsidiaries are being given an Internet enabled
Toshiba notebook for personal use in addition to their desktop PC. In return for a small monthly payment, WestLB staff can access the online world and familiarise themselves with the latest developments in information technology. Including training and support costs,
WestLB is investing some DM 30 million in the purchase of 6,000 - 7,000 portable PCs for its employees in Germany. At a later date, staff outside Germany are also due to be equipped with notebooks. Read more

The new high-speed InterCity Express (ICE) rail line between Cologne and Frankfurt is not only one of Germany's most ambitious transportation projects in recent decades, it's easily one of the most expensive. By the summer of 2002, by which time the new ICE-3 train will be carrying passengers at speeds of up to 300 km/h, the current journey time of 135 minutes will be slashed by more than half to just 58 minutes. That's a significant amount of time saved compared with both road and air and the principal motivation behind this momentous feat of engineering.
